Clint Dempsey returned to Seattle after a glorious showing at the World Cup in Brazil, just to prove himself a soccer hero once again by helping the Sounders beat our rivals, the Portland Timbers, 2-0, last night with a goal in the 71st minute at Century Link Field. The home crowd was delighted to have Mr. Dempsey and fullback DeAndre Yedlin of the USA Men’s National Team back on the pitch.

Clint Dempsey and team dominated the Timbers, with over 20 shots on goal, when Clint finally put one in with an assist from Gonzalo Pineda. Originally, Clint was scheduled for an abbreviated game – to go 65 or 70 minutes and not push too hard after an arduous month in the jungle. But no, not against Portland. We love hating them the most. And, the place was packed. Usually, the 300 section is not available, but last night, the Clink was filled to the brim.

When Clint left the field last night, a few minutes before the game was over, the home team crowd showed their love:

And again, when the team traditionally walks around the field post-game to thank the fans:

If you had your head in the sand and did not watch the USA perform in Brazil last month, then you may not know that Clint had a couple of glorious goals, and got his nose broken by a Ghana player, as a momento.

The US went all the way to the sweet 16, only to get stopped by Belgium.

Seattle has won four of its last five to move 10 points clear at the top of the Western Conference. The Sounders play a friendly against Tottenham Hotspur F.C. of the Premier League on Saturday.

And finally, just because a Sounders game ends, that does not mean that the post-game action stops.
