The EMP will open an exhibit celebrating the rise — and impact — of the music video.

It’s actually pretty cool. According to the EMP’s official website, the interactive exhibit allows visitors to “experience the art and culture” of the music video by watching and listening to some of the most historic, significant, popular, and thought-provoking music videos from the last several decades.

These aren’t just the videos you remember from TRL (actually, does anyone remember TRL?)

Music videos, in some form, date as far back as the 1940’s. Back then, they were called “Soundies.” The late 1950’s and 60’s introduced Scopitones (short, musical films that originated in France). The EMP exhibit will feature examples from both of these mediums.

Lovers of rock and modern music will find plenty to enjoy as well. Visitors can experience some of the most popular music videos of more recent generations — including selections from Madonna, David Bowie and Michael Jackson. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will also be featured.

The Spectacle: The Music Video exhibit opens Saturday, May 17th.
