Over the weekend, legendary drummer Scott Asheton of the Stooges passed away. Frontman Iggy Pop informed fans of the sad news via a Facebook post, which read,
My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night.
Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton’s have always been and continue to be a second family to me.
My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and his daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life.
“Ron,” of course, refers to the late Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton, who died in 2009. The Asheton brothers, along with Iggy Pop and bassist Dave Alexander formed the Stooges in the late ’60s, releasing their earth-shaking self-titled debut in 1969. The album influenced David Bowie, the Ramones, Joy Division, Nirvana, the White Stripes, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane’s Addiction, among many, many others.
