Minnesota’s own, Prince, with very little warning, took to the stage at his Paisley Park Studio over the weekend to entertain just over a thousand locals in an intimate show that kept them up into the wee hours. It’s the first time he’s invited crowds into his facility in over four years.
Lucky Minnesotans have been blessed with nine Prince shows this year, but this was the first time he had two backing bands. Remember The New Power Generation? They were there. And, if you were lucky enough, like this reporter was, to attend one of the Showbox Market shows back in August, then you know all about his newest all-female band, 3rdEyeGirl. They were there, too!
Prince is a notorious night-owl, and he started this show close to 10pm. Even better news for the folks in Minneapolis, the show was free – a far stretch from the $275 I paid to be wowed in Seattle.
According to the blog Current, Prince outdid himself with the classics “Purple Rain” and “Partyman, and blew the crowd away with his newer tunes “Musicology” and “Breakfast Can Wait.”
One thing you must know before leaving a Prince show, wait until the houselights come up, because the Artist likes to keep you waiting for the encore: many fans at this show began their exit when Prince left the stage, but he later returned to the educated few and did one more encore with “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “Cool.”
