You could say Seattle’s local boys Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are kind of a big deal. Most recently, the duo took home three Moonmen at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (and their performance of “Same Love” was one of the classier of the night). They sold out three concerts at Key Arena set for this December and shot another video for their album The Heist at Dick’s in Capitol Hill.
So it’s about that time in their careers when someone asks, “what advice would you give your younger self?” That’s exactly what the folks over at Grammys.com did.
Macklemore’s advice to himself was pretty simple. He told the interviewer he’d tell his younger self not to do drugs. The rapper also readily admitted that he probably wouldn’t have listened to his own advice. Macklemore also said it’s important to keep your identity. “Don’t let people’s outside perspectives change what you do or change who you are,” he tells the interviewer. “As an artist, that’s easier said than done,” he adds. “t’s a constant fight to remember why you make music, who you do it for, why it’s important.” To which Ryan Lewis added, “go with your gut.”
