Former Guns N’ Roses bassist and Seattle native Duff McKagan has been named one of Seattle Central Community College’s 2013 Distinguished Alumni of the Year.
McKagan took an untraditional route to college; first he got famous with Guns N’ Roses, then decided to go back to school at the age of 30. He told Seattle Central, “I made money in my 20s, became sober in my 30s… I decided to learn (about money) for myself so I wasn’t broke in my 40s. Going to college was a main driver for me.”
Duff credits Seattle Central for teaching him disciple and says he feels people in the music industry take him more seriously now that he has a college education.
After Seattle Central, McKagan also attended Seattle University.
He wasn’t able to accept the award in person because he’s touring with his band Walking Papers, but Seattle Central posted this video of McKagan accepting the honor.
