For about the last 80 years, you could buy condoms in St. Louis, but technically you could have been thrown in jail for it. That’s right. According to St. Louis Today, the old law says you can’t buy, sell or even give away condoms for free. Only licensed doctors and pharmacists are allowed to hand them out.
Luckily, no one has enforced this archaic law, but city leaders are finally deciding to officially repeal the condom ban, which has been on the books since 1934. Thank goodness.
And can you guess why there’s a push to change the law now? It likely has to do with St. Louis’s skyrocketing cases of sexually transmitted diseases. The city has some of the highest rates of chlamydia in the U.S. Yuck. Now, if that doesn’t make you want to buy an illegal condom…
