His catchy drinking anthem “Margaritaville” has been dubbed the most lucrative song of all time, beating out even “Happy Birthday to You.” JACK can totally believe this, first because it comes from the intellectuals over at Bloomberg. But also because it’s a simple, laid back song with a popular drink in the title that encourages getting hammered on your vacation.It’s perfect, really.
What it comes down to is branding. “Margaritaville” has spawned an entire empire that began in 2006 and now includes casinos, resorts, restaurants, even beachwear. Because, duh! Everybody loves margaritas!
Consider this: The “Happy Birthday” song generates about $2 million a year, while a report shows that the Margaritaville company brought in about $100 million in 2007. Just goes to show you, we may love our birthday cake, but we love our drinks more.
