2012 saw the return of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Aerosmith and (sort of) Led Zeppelin. 2013 promises lots of great albums, films and tours from some of music’s greatest legends.

  • Paul McCartney‘s “Rock” Return? In 2012, Paul released Kisses On The Bottom, a collection of pre-war standards, and a few new McCartney songs written in that style. There have been rumors that he’s been working with Dave Grohl on some heavier rock songs; they recently recorded “Cut Me Some Slack” together, which they performed (with Grohl’s Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic and fellow Foo Fighter Pat Smear) at the 12.12.12 concert and again on Saturday Night Live. There’s also been rumors that he’s been working with producer Mark Ronson (step-son of Foreigner’s Mick Jones; he’s produced Duran Duran and remixed Bob Dylan).

  • Elton John Takes A “Dive: Elton’s long-anticipated album, Diving Board, produced by T-Bone Burnett, will be out this year. The record will see Elton returning to his early piano-bass-drums format (with R&B star Raphael Saadiq on bass).  The album was originally due in 2012, but was delayed, so Elton could write more songs and give the album a “tighter identity.”

  • Aaron Neville‘s My True Story: Neville’s next album is all doo-wop covers, and was produced by Keith Richards and Don Was,  who has produced the Rolling Stones’ albums since 1994.” It drops January 22nd.

  • Motown: The Musical: Berry Gordy himself wrote this Broadway adaptation of the story of the record label that gave us Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Jackson 5 and more. The show starts previews this March.

  • The Return Of Van Halen? VH cancelled a tour last year; soon after the band revealed that Eddie Van Halen had to undergo emergency surgery for diverticulitis.  The band did say in a message on their website that they hope to return to the road in 2013.

  • The History Of The Eagles, Part 1: The long-talked about documentary on one of the most popular rock bands of all time will make its debut at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19. Eagle Joe Walsh, former Eagle Don Felder and songwriter J.D. Souther all talked to CBS Local about the doc.

  • Rod Stewart/Steve Winwood Tour: Two hopes for this tour: 1.) That they’ll collaborate on a few songs. 2.) That Steve will explain to Rod that he’s glad he did one Traffic reunion tour with drummer/singer Jim Capaldi in the ’90s. Capaldi passed away in 2005.  So maybe Rod will get the idea that a reunion with The Faces would be a good idea, and that he should do it soon, while Ron Wood, Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan are still healthy.

  • Unnamed Doors Project: When CBS Local talked to Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek about the Doors Live At The Bowl ’68 DVD, we noted the section on his own website asking fans for memories of their experiences at Doors concerts for a “future feature” on his site. “That is a speculative work at this particular time,” he told us, “Nothing concrete at all.” But we’re looking forward to finding out more about this crowd-sourced Doors project.

  • Springsteen & I: Speaking of crowd-sourced projects, last year Bruce Springsteen‘s team solicited video testimonials from fans for a documentary called Springsteen & I. Other than that, Bruce and The E Street Band have extended their Wrecking Ball tour into 2013 (although no U.S. dates have been announced yet).

  • The Rolling Stones! It may be wishful thinking, but three U.S. shows just doesn’t seem like enough.  Here’s hoping that they do more dates in 2013.
