More About REM’s song:

The rock band’s 1988 hit “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” managed to crack the iTunes Top 100 this week, and is featured on a number of publications’ apocalypse-themed playlists.

In fact, the tune, which comes from R.E.M.’s fifth album “Document,” has arguably become the quintessential doomsday song.  No Doubt covered it amid Y2K fears during MTV’s New Year’s Eve bash on December 31st, 1999, and the song saw another resurgence just last year after a Christian radio host predicted the rapture would take place on May 21st, 2011.

But R.E.M. isn’t the only popular song choice for the end of times. Playlists created this week by the likes of NBC News, the Huffington Post, UltimateClassicRock.com, and others include Britney Spears’ “Till the World Ends,” Europe’s “The Final Countdown,” U2’s “Until the End of the World,” and both the Beatles’ and the Doors’ songs simply titled “The End.”
