9/11 And Newtown: ‘Violent’ Songs Get Less Airplay

After 9/11, radio stations around the country turned down the volume on many songs deemed inappropriate – having anything to do with bombing or mass violence – from Fishbone’s Party At Ground Zero to Fly by Sugar Ray to Evil Ways by Santana.

The trend continutes as radio stations continue to play it safe in the wake of Friday’s shooting at the elementary school in Connecticut. The Foster The People hit Pumped Up Kicks is among the songs seeing a little less airplay. The 2010 hit has a catchy upbeat sound but its lyrics are loaded with the hook: “All the other kids with the pumped up kicks, you better run, better run, outrun my gun.” In a past interview with “Spinner UK,” Foster The People front man Ben Foster said the song was about a young outcast losing his mind and plotting revenge.

Kesha’s song “Die Young” is not heard as much, either, and the pop star responded saying she understood why her song was no longer being played on radio stations while sharing her condolences for the victims and their families.
