Americana singer-songwriter Patty Griffin played two benefits in her hometown of Austin, TX this weekend, and according to Rolling Stone, her set turned into a bit of a Led Zeppelin jam session with her bandmate (and significant other), Robert Plant.
“Three years ago a guy with big hair and a British accent called me and said he needed help singing on their record,” Griffin said, introducing Plant. “I followed him on the road for 18 months and after it all he said he’d be my driver.”
Griffin, of course, is referring to 2010′s Band of Joy, a record that revived Plant’s early band of the same name and brought her and Plant together as musical collaborators. Griffin’s set included songs from that record, as well as her own material from her upcoming album, American Kid, which Plant called “brilliant” when we spoke with him earlier this month at the Kennedy Center Honors. Of course, he could be biased, as Plant co-wrote some of the songs on it.
As for the Zeppelin part of the intimate club show, it included stripped-down versions of classic songs like “Black Country Woman,” “What Is And What Should Never Be,” “Tangerine,” “Going To California” and “Black Dog.”
Griffin and Plant’s performance benefited Griffin’s friend, injured/uninsured Austin musician Michael Fracasso, and the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians.
