Don McLean is known to many as the singer-songwriter behind the most epic song to ever hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts, but those interested in a deeper look into his life will soon be in luck. The “American Pie” singer will release a new documentary on DVD September 11th, titled American Troubadour.
First broadcast on PBS back in March, the documentary highlights McLean’s 40+ years in the industry and features interviews with Brian Wilson, R.E.M.’s Mike Mills and more. Many of McLean’s TV performances through the years are included in American Troubadour, as are performances of his songs by Elvis and Fred Astaire.
For the doc, McLean worked with director Jim Brown, who’s made documentaries on Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and more.
Also out on September 11th is a two-disc set of McLean’s biggest hits, also titled American Troubadour. Naturally, this will include his big hits off 1971 album American Pie, which included the self-titled tale and “Vincent” (often known as “Starry Starry Night”).
