Soundgarden‘s first new song in 15 years will be featured on the soundtrack for the upcoming Avengers movie. “When the opportunity arose to write an original song for Marvel’s The Avengers film… we thought it could be a cool match” says the band.
Rolling Stone reports Soundgarden did put out two unreleased songs on a greatest hits album Telephasm a few years back, but notes Black Rain and The Telephantasm were reworked from previous material from the late 80’s and early 90’s. “Live to Rise is an all-new song composed after the band reunited, and it gives us some sense of what to expect from the band’s forthcoming album.”
Frontman Chris Cornell says “I feel like Soundgarden can continue, and probably always should’ve had the attitude of being a formed, functioning band that just needed a break… We have a new album, it’s mostly finished and it should be out in the spring of 2012. It really felt like we haven’t missed a beat.” Cornell says the only real hurdle to Soundgarden’s reunion in 2010 was that the entire band had to agree to it. The band is currently preparing for a summer tour in Europe, including stops at several major music festivals.
Soundgarden hasn’t released the entire Live To Rise track yet, so we’ll have to wait for the Avengers Assemble album to be released on May 1st. The band has released a small snippet of audio from the song and it definitely has that old Soundgarden feel with big guitar riffs. Give it a listen here:
