Black Crowes – Southern Harmony and Musical Companion (Def American, 1992)

I typed “southern rock” into the search bar of my iTunes (looking for something from Capricorn Records, my favorite label of all time) but I got The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion. Not a bad alternative, right?

My girlfriend at the time this record was released — May 1992 — slagged on the [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Black Crowes[/lastfm] for their similarities to the [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rolling Stones[/lastfm]. She called them the Stone Crowes. And I had seen them the year previous when they opened for [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Z.Z. Top[/lastfm] in the Syracuse Carrier Dome and, truth be told, they were horrible.

But they’ve made some damn good rock and roll records in their time and TSH&MC is a pretty solid example. The slow gospel groove of “Thorn in My Pride” always worked for me as a nice mixer with, well, the Stones and stuff like [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Blues Traveler[/lastfm].

“Sting Me” has that nice [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Georgia Satellites[/lastfm] stomp and “Remedy” still works today on a lot of levels; mix it with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Social Distortion[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Humble Pie[/lastfm].
