Ten Bands Whose Names Are Scarier Than Their Music

You would think that a band with a name like [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Insane Clown Posse[/lastfm] would make the list, wouldn’t you? Ah…but you didn’t read closely enough. We’re counting down the 10 bands whose names are scary…their music, not so much.

10. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Fine Young Cannibals[/lastfm]

The flaming guitar in the video for She Drives Me Crazy may be a little scary, and the insanity induced by the “she” of the song’s title may prompt lead singer [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Roland Gift[/lastfm] to join up with a clown posse, but other than that, Fine Young Cannibals have yet to be seen eating human flesh on stage. On a side note, their name comes from the 1960 romantic drama All The Fine Young Cannibals, starring Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood.

9. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Crash Test Dummies[/lastfm]

The name chosen by Canadian alt-rockers Crash Test Dummies evokes the thought of those scary dummies featured in auto safety commercials, but the only truly scary thing about the Crash Test Dummies is the state of lead singer Brad Roberts’ voice in the acoustic clip of their hit Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm above.

8. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Dead Or Alive[/lastfm]

The scariest thing about [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Culture Club[/lastfm] wannabe’s Dead Or Alive is the sight of lead singer Pete Burns in that makeup, kimono and eye patch.

7. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Poison[/lastfm]

It’s the 80’s rocker fashion, one that indomitable frontman [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bret Michaels[/lastfm] continues to sport to this day, that’s the most frightening thing about Poison.

6. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]10,000 Maniacs[/lastfm]

The mellow band that launched the solo career of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Natalie Merchant[/lastfm], had a penchant for choosing ghoulish sounding names. Before they landed on 10,000 Maniacs, the band was called Burn Victims. Like #10 band Fine Young Cannibals, 10,ooo Maniacs also garnered inspiration for their name from a film, in this instance the low-budget horror classic Two Thousand Maniacs! They just bumped the number up by 8,000.

5. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Killers[/lastfm]

The only violence inflicted by The Killers has been the sharp verbal barbs tossed at other bands such as [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Fall Out Boy[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Green Day[/lastfm] by The Killers‘ lead singer [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Brandon Flowers[/lastfm].

4. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Theory Of A Deadman[/lastfm]

Granted, Theory Of A Deadman‘s All Or Nothing is a somewhat haunting ballad, and lead singer Tyler Connolly’s resemblance to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Chris Issak[/lastfm] in the All Or Nothing video is kind of scary, but that’s where the goosebumps end.

3. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Smashing Pumpkins[/lastfm]

Okay, so the band’s name might not be that scary, but it definitely evokes the thought of hoodlums terrorizing the neighborhood on Halloween.

2. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Violent Femmes[/lastfm]

The group’s name brings to mind B-movie “women in prison” classics such as Caged Heat or The Big Doll House. And although there may be a hint of violence in percussionist Victor DeLorenzo’s drumming, but there are no “femmes” to be found in the Violent Femmes.

1. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Air Supply[/lastfm]

Okay…this may be a stretch. But we just DARE you to bring an Air Supply CD to a Halloween party this season. Within seconds of the opening strains of All Out Of Love every partygoer is guaranteed to let out a bloodcurdling scream and begin running for the door!
