Shawn Kemp Jr., heir to the best sports nickname in Seattle history, is coming to the University of Washington.
After battling academic issues and being unable to play for the two schools he chose over UW, Shawn Kemp Jr. (6′ 9″, 260) has signed a financial aid program and will join UW’s touted basketball program for the 2011-2012 season.
From the Seattle Times’ Percy Allen:
Perhaps if Shawn Kemp Jr. — who signed a financial-aid package with the Huskies and began summer-school classes Thursday — were playing anywhere else, he might be spared the comparisons to father Shawn Kemp, the Sonics legend and 14-year NBA veteran.
Coach Lorenzo Romar believes the big man can help this season, and for several more to come, but Kemp’s got to get in shape to fit into UW’s high-octane offense.
“He has to get in shape,” Romar said. “When he’s in condition and he’s ready to go and he’s playing every day, he definitely can be a guy that can help us on the inside.”
We figure give him a year or two; until then, memories…
