A Queen Biopic With Borat: Sacha Baron Cohen To Portray Freddie Mercury
Sacha Baron Cohen–yes, the guy who played Borat and Bruno–has signed on to portray the late [lastfm]Freddie Mercury[/lastfm] in an as-yet-unnamed biopic about [lastfm]Queen[/lastfm].
The film is being written by Peter Morgan, who penned Frost/Nixon (and also, ironically enough, the film The Queen). The film covers the band’s formation leading up to the appearance of [lastfm]Queen[/lastfm] at [lastfm]Live Aid[/lastfm] in ’85.
Slashfilm confirmed that GK Films has cleared the rights to some of [lastfm]Queen[/lastfm]’s songs, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, Another One Bites The Dust, and You’re My Best Friend. Slashfilm also notes that the remaining members of Queen ([lastfm]Brian May[/lastfm], [lastfm]Roger Taylor[/lastfm] and [lastfm]John Deacon[/lastfm]) are behind the film.
Hopefully the film will get a release date close to the 20th anniversary of [lastfm]Freddie Mercury[/lastfm]’s death. Mercury passed away on November 24, 1991 from AIDS-related bronchial pneumonia.
