Woodland Park Zoo’s longest resident, Gertie the hippo was put to sleep Wednesday. The 47 year old hippo was suffering from age-related osteoarthritis and despite medication, had a difficult time getting around, according to a statement from the zoo.

Gertrude weighed about 5,000 pounds and had lived at the zoo since 1966. You can still see the other female hippos in its African Savannna: 31-year-old Water Lily and 10-year-old Guadalupe. The life expectancy for a hippo is 49 years; in the wild hippos can be expected to live about 45 years.

RIP Gertie, may you find happiness in Hippo Heaven.
